Interview

Speculation about Thomas Tuchel’s successor at FC Bayern is gaining momentum. Dazn expert and former professional Sebastian Kneißl has a clear idea of who he would like and what problems there could be for Bayern in the next few weeks.

watson: Sebastian, can you explain why the coaching chair at FC Bayern has been one of the biggest ejection seats in the Bundesliga in recent years?

Sebastian Kneißl: You can tell that the entire club doesn’t have the long-held identity. After Hoeneß and Rummenigge were out, Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidžić tried to build a new “Mia-san-mia” image. That didn `t work. The result is always reflected on the pitch and the main person responsible is the coach.

So the current crisis also goes back to the failed attempt with Kahn and Salihamidžić?

There is no one position that is to blame. All positions have made mistakes – now also under Tuchel. I would place a greater share of the blame on the team because they are ultimately the executives.

But wouldn’t it have been logical to continue with Tuchel and make it clear to the players that they have to change?

Meanwhile, the players in this sport have been given too much power. This is also reflected in very young fans: They support a player and then change clubs with him. They are also the executive power. The clubs brought this on themselves.

How?

With compromise solutions, such as promising a player the captaincy if he extends his contract or paying horrendous sums of salary. The clubs are opening the door for this development. Of course, the players gratefully accept such advantages, everyone would.

Bayern spoke of “realignment” in their press release. Apart from the coaching position, what else needs to happen in the squad?

A realignment or a change is clearly accompanied by a clear plan. They will have it internally, but they haven’t discussed it publicly yet. An example: If I talk about Kieran Trippier and end up buying Sacha Boey, it seems like panic buying. Both are completely different types of players.

Are there also positive things?

Basically, I like the way of thinking of Uli Hoeneß, who once said that the club provides the players and the coach has to form a team from them. This makes you independent of a single trainer. But I still question Tuchel’s choice.

“The word ‘ego’ is very important at FC Bayern. The club has always had big egos. But the egos of the past and present are different.”

Why exactly?

Because Julian Nagelsmann is also top in terms of content, but didn’t manage to lead the team. Then I can’t get a trainer who belongs to the same trainer type category.

Do you think Bayern can even pull it off with Tuchel until the end of the season?

With something like this, the lame-duck problem quickly arises. The players who don’t like him are now relieved. But it depends on the personality structure of each individual player. With the top professionals you can now see who delivers top performance.

So it shows who pulls through regardless of the coach?

I think the whole of football Germany will look at it critically. Future career paths depend on the coming months. The whole of Europe will now look to see who behaves in an exemplary manner and therefore has what it takes to become a top star. But everyone has to recommend themselves for the new season at FC Bayern.

Is there a risk that this will lead to excessive egotism?

At FC Bayern the word “ego” is very important. The club always had big egos. But the egos of the past and present are different. Stefan Effenberg, Oliver Kahn and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben have brought their egos into the team structure for mutual success. With the current players I have the feeling that the I comes before the we.

Will those responsible for the club draw the necessary conclusions from this and bring in a coach again who is particularly good at leading people?

I’m very excited about that. Xabi Alonso is considered the hottest candidate. But I don’t see him in Munich.

How come?

I think Liverpool is more popular or he stays in Leverkusen for another year, plays with the Werkself Champions League and then goes to Liverpool.

Who could you imagine in Munich?

I would have liked my old coach, José Mourinho. He could have taken over until the summer if Tuchel was fired.

Then the Bayern fans wouldn’t see any more beautiful football this season.

Definitely not. But he would intervene with the egos. Even if attractive football wasn’t played, the results would matter. The selection of the new coach will be the final shot for those in charge. There were too many coaches who didn’t work.

Would José Mourinho even stay in Munich for just a few months?

I don’t believe. Or at least he would ensure with a clause that the contract would be extended if he achieved a certain goal. I would like it because I think it would help. But I don’t think it’s realistic.

There have been various reports in the last few days that Tuchel has lost some players in the dressing room. If something like this comes up in the media, is it already too late or can the coach still save something?

I know the feeling from my own career. In one year I played 31 of 34 games, in the second season I played not a minute. When you train well and even the team says they don’t understand why you’re not playing, every word the coach says feels wrong. The best example at Bavaria is currently Mathys Tel.

Because he always brings momentum but is never allowed to start right from the start?

Every time he has played he delivers. He influences the game in a positive way. Now Tuchel says Tel has lost its momentum. That may be the case, but Tuchel has to ask himself how much blame he bears? If a young player delivers for weeks but doesn’t get a chance from the start, resignation or a loss of tension is an understandable reaction.

“You always have to keep in mind that Thomas Tuchel is a world coach at the highest level.”

Under Thomas Tuchel, Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka were not without controversy. Did he thereby create a construction site for himself?

You always have to keep in mind that Thomas Tuchel is a world coach at the highest level. He always has good ideas, sometimes perhaps crazy ideas that don’t work out. It was also clear that at FC Bayern it’s not just about the content. In Munich you also need good leadership, you have to develop a feeling for the dynamics and include people like Neuer, Müller, Goretzka and Kimmich. But I definitely agree with him on one thing.

In which?

Joshua Kimmich plays a good role as a six, but he is not world class. I would have liked a little more consistency from Tuchel. If he says he doesn’t see him in that position, he needs to position him at right-back or in the center of midfield only in games where it really fits.

What do you think of the premise that a German-speaking trainer must work in Munich?

Little, because this limits the clubs. In times of globalization and the development of new markets, it is important to hire the best possible trainer. If he speaks English, Italian or French, then you have to get him.
