South Korea’s National Para-Badminton Team Shines at World Championships: Six Medals Won

South Korea’s national disabled badminton team players won six medals at the World Championships.

The national para-badminton team players won two silver medals and four bronze medals at the 2024 Thailand Para-Badminton World Championships held in Pattaya, Thailand from the 20th to the 25th.

Of the 350 players participating in the competition, a total of 13 players (10 men and 3 women) participated in the Korean disabled badminton national team.

A total of two medals were awarded in the WH1 (spinal cord disability) men’s singles event. Choi Jeong-man (45, Daegu Urban Development Corporation) won the silver medal, and Jeong Jae-gun (47, Ulsan Metropolitan City Jung-gu Office) won the bronze medal. Choi Jeong-man, world No. 1 and silver medalist at the 2022 Hangzhou Para Asian Games, defeated China’s Yang Tong in the semifinals and advanced to the finals, but lost 1-2 to Kusimo, who defeated Jeong Jae-gun in the semifinals, and took the silver medal.

In the WH2 (amputation and other) men’s singles, Yoo Soo-young (21, Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled) won the silver medal, and Kim Jeong-jun (45, Daegu Urban Development Corporation) won the bronze medal. Badminton’s next-generation ace Yoo Soo-young, ranked 5th in the world, defeated Kim Jeong-jun, ranked 2nd in the world in the semifinals, and advanced to the finals, but was blocked by his arch-rival Daiki Kajiwara and had to be content with a silver medal.

A total of two bronze medals were won in the doubles event. Choi Jeong-man and Kim Jeong-jun won a bronze medal in the WH1-WH2 men’s doubles. The world number one team in this category, Choi Jeong-man and Kim Jeong-jun, won the bronze medal after being defeated by Mai Jian Peng and Kusimo in the semifinals. Choi Jeong-man also competed in the WH1-WH2 mixed doubles tournament with Lee Seon-ae (54, Busan Metropolitan City Disabled Badminton Association), but she was blocked by the Chinese group and won the bronze medal.

This competition was a very important competition as it was a competition to check the performance of the entire national team for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games and the last competition to qualify for the Paralympic Games. The badminton team secured one national spot for the Paris Paralympic Games with its performance in this tournament.

Meanwhile, this competition was dispatched with financial support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, and the Lottery Committee.
