Senegal’s Delegation for the 13th African Games: List of Selected Sports Disciplines and Quotas

For the 13th edition of the African Games, a multi-sport competition scheduled from March 8 to 23 in Ghana, Senegal will be represented by a delegation of 98 athletes from 11 national federations, a medical corps of 9 people, not including the supervisors.

The Ministry of Sports has just revealed the list of sports disciplines selected, as well as the quotas per discipline for Senegal’s participation in the 2024 African Games.

The 11 sporting disciplines chosen are football, taekwondo, athletics, judo, karate, wrestling, swimming, beach volleyball, triathlon, table tennis and badminton.

“The minister really wanted to favor certain disciplines which are making enormous efforts such as badminton, beach volleyball, triathlon. Beyond that, for example, we have chances in karate, judo, taekwondo. They are potential medalists, not to mention football with the two U20 selections,” confides an agent from the Ministry of Sports in “Stades”.

Who adds: “Participation in these African Games was saved by the minister, because at the end of the African Cup of Nations, the financial situation was a little difficult. The minister validated all the proposals and asked that people be put in excellent conditions. Now, the federations have the free choice to select their athletes.”

According to the sports daily, 30 disciplines are included in the program of these quadrennial games which will be played this year in Accra and Cape Coast.

Eight (8) of these disciplines, which are wrestling, tennis, cycling, athletics, swimming, badminton, table tennis and triathlon, will serve as qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Apart from cycling, Senegal will therefore be able to try its chances of qualifying for the Olympics in the 7 other qualifying disciplines for the global meeting from July 26 to August 11, 2024, in the French capital.

At the 2019 African Games in Rabat (Morocco), Senegal was entered in 15 disciplines and finished 22nd with 22 medals among 54 countries including 1 gold, 5 silver and 16 bronze.

The medal-winning Senegalese athletes came from the following 9 disciplines: judo, taekwondo, athletics, karate, canoeing, fencing, sports shooting, men’s football and wrestling.
