Thanks to a hat-trick from its winger Duhan van der Merwe, the Chardon XV took on England at Murrayfield on Saturday (30-21), for the 3rd day of the Tournament.

Scotland broke the momentum of its historic rival, England (30-21), whom it beat for the fourth consecutive time in the Six Nations Tournament, Saturday at Murrayfield charmed by Duhan van der Merwe.

The tide has turned in the “Calcutta Cup”, an ancestral rivalry that the English used to dominate for three decades, with only three setbacks in 1990 and 2018. Now, it is the XV of Thistle that makes the law!

In the last seven duels, the English have only pocketed one victory against their “Auld Enemy”, in 2020, the year of their last title in the Tournament.

The dream of the coronation took flight at Murrayfield under the kicks of Finn Russell, impeccable against the poles, and under the tumbles of the untenable van der Merwe, author of a hat-trick of tries (21st, 30th, 45th) which brings him one unit closer to Stuart Hogg’s national record.

The English suffered from the inspirations of their hosts, without being able to repeat the “happy ending” of the late reversals against Italy (27-24) and Wales (16-14) .

“VDW” hat trick

However, they made an almost perfect start, this time, rewarded by a first try from George Furbank (5th), transformed by George Ford, who then pushed the advantage to 10-0 ‘a penalty in the first quarter of an hour.

Pushed by its supporters, the selection in the navy blue jersey managed to turn the situation around thanks to the “hat trick” of its supersonic winger van der Merwe, elected man of the match.

The South African-born Edinburgh winger resisted the return of several Englishmen for his first try, took off from his half of the field like a rocket for the second, then exploited after a rebound a superb diagonal at the foot of Russell to complete his masterpiece.

His hat-trick allows him to count 26 tries in 37 selections, one unit behind the national record of legend Stuart Hogg who scored 27 in 100 appearances with the XV du Chardon.

Victorious in Cardiff, then narrowly beaten by France, Scotland took second place in the Tournament ahead of England, while awaiting the Blues’ match on Sunday against Italy.
