Confident, frank, unique and refreshing

In 2023, China’s two major sports events, the Hangzhou Asian Games and the Chengdu Universiade, have attracted the attention of the world. A group of post-00s generation sweated on behalf of the country on the field and performed a wonderful chapter of youth. Confidence and frankness hang on their faces, giving people a different kind of fresh feeling.

When Li Shifeng came on the stage, the Chinese team was already standing on the edge of the cliff.

In the men’s badminton team final of the Hangzhou Asian Games, the Chinese team’s top men’s singles and men’s doubles were defeated by the Indian team, falling behind by a score of 0:2. The key point that determined the balance of victory fell to Li Shifeng, born in the 2000s.

As the promising star of Chinese badminton, Li Shifeng once achieved the feat of becoming the first post-2000 champion in the All England Championship, but he also encountered the trough of poor performance. It is the first time for young people to be under such pressure at the critical moment.

“The pressure was indeed great, but I didn’t think too much about it.” Li Shifeng said, “The only thing I can do is to maximize my physical fitness.”

In the first game, Li Shifeng saved the match point and reversed his opponent. In the second game, Li Shifeng, who became more and more courageous as he fought, won by a large score, sounding the clarion call for the team to counterattack. In the end, the Chinese team staged a desperate counterattack and won the precious men’s team gold medal. In the subsequent men’s singles competition, Li Shifeng defeated strong opponents one after another and became the first post-2000 badminton individual event champion in the history of the Asian Games.

“When athletes are down, it is very difficult to win a game. This is my experience after experiencing it.” Li Shifeng said, “I hope that the good state can last longer and the time at the bottom is shorter.”

Not afraid of challenges, daring to fight and fight hard, this is the formidable strength of Chinese athletes born in the 2000s.

From rising to prominence at the Tokyo Olympics to blooming at the Hangzhou Asian Games, the post-2000 generation in Chinese sports has taken the lead. The average age of the Chinese delegation at the Hangzhou Asian Games is 25 years old, and a total of 262 post-00 athletes have won medals – 13-year-old skateboarder Cui Chenxi became China’s youngest Asian Games champion, and 17-year-old shooter Huang Yuting was crowned the Triple Crown. Diving duo Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi competed in the “Splash Disappearance Technique” and staged a “fight between gods”…

During the Chengdu Universiade badminton match, Ugandan player Muyangja Amos’ racket broke. Chinese player Wang Zhengxing, who was competing at the same venue, lent his spare racket to his opponent. After the game, Wang Zhengxing gave the racket to Amos, and the two young men took a group photo together, leaving a good story in the young arena. “In addition to winning and losing in sports competitions, there is also friendship.” Wang Zhengxing said.

This year is another Olympic year. In Paris, France, these Chinese young players born in the 2000s will continue to shine on the field.

Patriotism, love of family, pride and self-reliance

In 2021, “Clear love, only for China” has moved countless people. This sentence comes from Chen Xiangrong, a border guard born in the 2000s, and he has fulfilled this promise with his life.

At the beginning of the new year in 2024, in the popular Harbin Ice and Snow World, the mobile phone wallpaper of Xie, an undergraduate student at Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, also said “Clear Love, Only for China.”

When classmate Xie was in her second year of high school, she saw Chen Xiangrong’s deeds and was deeply touched by “Clear Love, Only for China”. From then on, this quote became her phone wallpaper until now. “For me, it is more than just a picture, it is also the motivation to move forward in my senior year of high school.” After the college entrance examination, Xie chose to major in traditional Chinese medicine, hoping to contribute to the development of the medical industry.

Unexpectedly becoming popular on the Internet, Xie said, “‘Clear Love, Only for China’ is an expression of my deep love for the motherland, and also a reflection of my personal beliefs and efforts. I firmly believe that through our efforts and struggle, the motherland will More prosperity! We must live up to the times, cherish our time, and strive to create a better future for our motherland!”

The simple and sonorous words convey the infinite love of China’s post-00s generation for the motherland. Fighting for the motherland has become the common goal of the post-00s generation of young people.

After the Chengdu Universiade, Jiang Ping, a post-00s girl from Chengdu College of Sichuan International Studies University, often received emails from new friends.

“International University Sports Federation officials, athletes from different continents, coaches who traveled tens of thousands of miles to Chengdu… the Universiade connects young people together,” Jiang Ping said.

During the Universiade, Jiang Ping served as a Chinese and English commentator at the Universiade Village Exhibition Center. Shu brocade and Shu embroidery, porcelain bamboo weaving, rain altar colorful dragon… In addition to the competition, there was an endless stream of “villagers” in the exhibition center. From pre-job drills to the closure of Universiade Village, Jiang Ping served here for 29 days.

“Many foreign athletes have come here several times. Some have brought teammates, and some have video connections with their families while listening to the explanations and enjoying the wonderful cultural displays together.” Jiang Ping said, “From the eyes and tone, I can I feel their love for traditional Chinese culture.”

Most of the volunteers who are responsible for explaining together with Jiang Ping are born after 2000. During training and drills, young people often gather together to discuss copywriting. “The exhibition center is a window. Here, we represent the Chinese youth and use young people’s methods to make more people fall in love with Chinese culture.” Jiang Ping said.

Show yourself on the world stage

Starting from the media station team, first to the Chengdu Museum, then to the Kuanzhai Alley… During the Chengdu Universiade, this was the daily trajectory of Huang Yating, a post-2000 generation.

During the Universiade, there were 10 city collection routes for media reporters to choose from, covering elements with local characteristics such as ancient Shu civilization, Three Kingdoms culture, panda culture, intangible cultural heritage, etc. Huang Yating was responsible for the service of one of the routes. From the Chengdu Museum to the Kuanzhai Alley, one can explore the footprints of civilization while experiencing the lively fireworks in the city. Media reporters from all over the world understand this city from a broader perspective.

Huang Yating studied abroad at the University of Sydney, majoring in econometrics. When she learned about the recruitment opportunity for Chengdu Universiade volunteers, she immediately signed up. “Chengdu is a city I have lived in for a long time, and I especially want to contribute to the Universiade and this city.” Huang Yating said.

Although there are tour guides who are responsible for explaining the route, Huang Yating also made a lot of preparations herself. “This city has a profound historical and cultural heritage. We can’t just ask questions and not know everything.” She said with a smile. In the first few days of the Chengdu Universiade, Huang Yating could only sleep four or five hours a day. But she said that she seems to have endless energy. When she is not leading the team, she will also serve as a guest translator to provide as much help as she can.

“When they heard that I was coming to the Universiade, my classmates at school were all envious. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a sports event held in their own country when they were young and participate in it,” Huang Yating said.

Being abroad and caring about her hometown, Huang Yating chose to become a volunteer to show the world the charm of her hometown. Chen Xinyuan, born in the 2000s, is shining in the field of cloud computing and showing himself on the stage of international competitions.

“I not only want to win myself, I also want to lead more people to win. I want to keep this gold medal in China!” At the 2023 Shenzhen Global Innovation Talent Forum, Chen Xinyuan from Shenzhen Technician College spoke loudly about his plan.

Chen Xinyuan is the gold medal winner in the cloud computing project of the 2022 World Skills Competition Special Competition. This is the first time that China has achieved a breakthrough of “zero” gold medals in this project.

When Chen Xinyuan entered Shenzhen Technician College at the age of 15, he saw a poster showing a senior student from the college winning an award at the World Skills Competition. A seed of a dream sprouted in his heart: “Skills students can also stand on a world-class stage and compete with others. Athletes from various countries and regions compete against each other, wearing national flags and bringing honor to their country.”

Dreams are beautiful, but we still need to take one step at a time. Training for 12 hours a day, day after day, year after year, is an extremely difficult process. But Chen Xinyuan took it.

In 2018, Chen Xinyuan participated in the selection of the network system management project of the 45th World Championship and failed in the provincial competition. In March 2019, he came to Shanghai to participate in the national selection competition with the first place in the provincial competition to compete for admission to the cloud computing project of the 45th World Championship. Unfortunately, Chen Xinyuan’s performance dropped all the way due to mistakes during the competition, and he finally settled in seventh place.

For a moment, Chen Xinyuan was a little depressed, but the coach’s encouragement and his original dream made him stand up again and start all over again. Hard work pays off. On December 13, 2020, Chen Xinyuan won the gold medal in the cloud computing project of the first National Vocational Skills Competition and received a ticket to the 2022 World Skills Competition special competition.

Compared with the last time, Chen Xinyuan is much calmer this time. “Some of our competitors are from famous universities in the world, as well as former employees of Samsung and Amazon.” The competition process was extremely fierce, but Chen Xinyuan was able to handle it with ease and completed the 4-day competition with a near perfect score. The gold medal finally fell to Chen Xinyuan.

“I want to say to myself who was squatting and crying outside the stadium when I was 18 years old, ‘I can, I did it’!” Chen Xinyuan said these words when receiving the award.

Now, Chen Xinyuan has become a professional coach. He hopes to share his experience and knowledge with more skilled young people in the future and help the Chinese cloud computing team go further on the stage of the World Skills Competition.
