On Thursday Jannik Sinner and the Italian tennis Davis Cup team were guests of President Sergio Mattarella. This made the South Tyrolean Australian Open winner smile.

The entire Italian Davis Cup team was a guest at Mattarella on Thursday. In his speech, the President expressed numerous compliments for Sinner – and that he had followed his path to winning the Australian Open as much as possible. However, says Mattarella, he unfortunately only saw half the final.

“Congratulations to Sinner for winning the Grand Slam, that’s a great achievement. But I have to admit that I was only able to follow the final from the 4th set onwards. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend beforehand and that’s a good thing because it was good for my mood that I didn’t see the first two sets,” said a joking President, who also brought a mischievous smile to the South Tyrolean tennis star’s lips. As a reminder: Sinner was 0-2 behind in the final against Daniil Medvedev. Mattarella not only thanked Sinner for his performance, but also the entire tennis team that was involved in the successful Davis Cup.

My Sinner at the state reception said about the Davis Cup triumph: “It was a victory for the whole country. What was important was not just that we triumphed, but that it was a collective success. I am proud that we are here today. They are the fruits of hard work.” Finally, Mattarella praised the South Tyrolean once again: “I can learn a lot from him. I was impressed by his down-to-earth attitude and relaxed demeanor. I like that.”
