Philadelphia 76ers Star Joel Embiid Suffers Torn Meniscus: MVP Hopes in Jeopardy

Bad news has fallen on the Philadelphia 76ers who learned that their star player Joel Embiid suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee.

It was a team manager who announced the news early in the evening. For the moment, we do not know the duration of his absence.

The Cameroonian played his last match two days ago against Golden State. Embiid was injured after Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga fell on his left leg. He was used for 29 minutes and had 14 points. However, he had not played in the previous meeting three days earlier.

Before the last game, he had maintained an incredible streak of 22 games with at least 30 points per game. He notably had a 70-point game on January 22 against San Antonio.

Embiid has already missed 12 games this season, jeopardizing his chances of being eligible for a second consecutive MVP award. The new collective bargaining agreement requires players, in most cases, to play 65 regular season games to be eligible for trophies or honors in the NBA.

This season, he averages 35.3 points per game and 11.3 rebounds in 34 games.

The 76ers are 29-17 since the start of the season.
