NBA’s Minimum Game Requirement Rule Sparks Controversy and Injuries

Everything runs the risk of being controversial when many millions of dollars are at stake. With the signing of the collective agreement last August, the league introduced a minimum number of games to qualify for individual season awards. The 65 matches (and more than 20 minutes in those matches) required to enter the best quintets or compete for awards such as MVP were agreed to fight against the load management. However, in the case of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Haliburton, the danger that their seasons have of falling below this scale has made them force themselves despite being injured. “It’s a stupid rule,” says the Pacers point guard.

Haliburton has played 34 games with the above requirements (he was limited to 13 minutes in the game in which he suffered his current injury). So he will only be able to miss five games between now and the end of the season if he wants to be part of one of the best quintets. His presence in these could make the maximum extension of his contract rookie went from 25% to 30% of the total salary cap. Which means about 40 million dollars in five years.

Both cases, although Embiid’s has more to do with status than financial matters, have raised the debate in recent hours about the appropriateness or not of the rule. Joe Dumars, executive vice president of the NBA, has made clear that players forcing themselves to reach the minimum number are “unintended consequences.” The executive assures that the NBA does not plan to alter its plans. «We knew that when the first players began to be affected there would be problems. The number is what it is, I’m not surprised [con los debates]», he points out.

«It should be remembered that this number is not stipulated at random, but is the result of long negotiations with the Players Association. The 65 games represent, more or less, 20% of the season. “Everyone in the environment signed it,” he adds. «I feel bad for those who suffer injuries and cannot meet the minimum. But whoever occupies those positions [en los quintetos All-NBA] “I assure you that he will have had an incredible season.” In his conversation with Yahoo SportsDumars has not had any comment regarding the risk in which this regulation puts the player who is forced to play injured.
