Football: Raphaël Varane leaves Manchester United after three seasons

Raphaël Varane will leave Manchester United at the end of the season, as the Mancunian club announced on Tuesday. The 2018 world champion, who ended his career with the French team after the World Cup in Qatar, joined United from Real Madrid in 2021. With the Red Devils, he played 93 matches in three seasons and scored two goals.

In a video posted on X, the central defender addresses Manchester United supporters. “I had some incredible years playing for this special club and wearing this jersey. The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man United player it was crazy. The atmosphere was magnificent. I fell in love with the club,” says the 31-year-old.

“I also fell in love with the supporters. You have to play Manchester United to understand what it means! For my children, this is home. It will remain a special place for me, forever,” continues the former Lensois, who remembers the only title he won with “Man U”, the Carabao Cup in 2023.

A farewell on Wednesday against Newcastle

“I will remember the fans who come to Wembley all my life. Sharing this moment with them was something absolutely incredible,” recalls Raphaël Varane. “Even though we had a difficult season, I am very confident for the future. The new owners came with a clear plan and a good strategy. I’ll see you again at Old Trafford to say goodbye, for the last home game. It will be a very emotional day for me, that’s for sure,” concludes the Frenchman.

Eighth in the Premier League with two games remaining – their worst result since 1990 – United host Newcastle tomorrow Wednesday for the penultimate day of the season before traveling to Brighton this weekend. Injured since the beginning of April, Varane remains uncertain even if his club indicates that he “hopes to be available again before the end of the season”.
