Media Giants Join Forces to Launch Sports Streaming Service: Department of Justice to Review Deal

The Justice Department will review the terms of the deal once finalized, according to two sources familiar with the matter cited in a report. Earlier this month, the three media companies announced they will launch a joint venture to start a sports streaming service this fall in an effort to attract younger audiences. The trio owns an extensive portfolio of professional and college sports rights, including the National Football League, National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, FIFA World Cup and collegiate competitions.

The new app will offer non-exclusive access to a collection of sports television networks, including ESPN, Fox Sports 1 and TNT, as well as streaming content. So far, there has been no response from Fox, Warner Bros. Discovery or Disney. Additionally, the Department of Justice declined to comment on the matter.

On the other hand, Disney also announced that it will launch a standalone version of the ESPN streaming service in fall 2025. This new platform will integrate digital features such as sports betting, fantasy sports and e-commerce. Disney CEO Bob Iger informed investors during the company’s quarterly earnings call that ESPN’s digital offering will create “a comprehensive sports destination unlike any other option currently available in the market.” .

This collaboration between Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery shows the growing interest of media companies in the sports streaming market. With increasing competition in this sector, companies are looking for new ways to attract younger audiences and capture a share of the lucrative online sports streaming market. It will be interesting to see how this new service develops and what impact it will have on the streaming industry as a whole.
