Major Subsidence Threatens Cycling Events in Kluisbergen: Repairs Underway

“A while ago there was a major subsidence up to the street that runs to the Paterberg. And that is a problem,” says Philippe Willequet (Municipal Interests), the mayor of Kluisbergen. “That was due to the heavy rain. As a result, the street was no longer stable and safe enough.”

The subsidence happened a month ago, but the repairs are still not finished. The land and forest are the property of the Nature and Forest Agency. “You cannot simply have work carried out there. And we also have to ask for quotes,” the municipal council said.

Kluisbergen is now working on a solution together with the Agency, but time is running out, says the mayor. “We have now decided to put slabs 12 meters deep in the ground, so that the street becomes stable again. In the best case, the works can start in the middle of next week and will last 2 to 3 weeks.”

That would be just in time for the E3 Saxo Classic on Friday, March 22, and the Tour of Flanders the following week. “We have to assume that everything will be fine for the important cycling races that take place there,” says the mayor.
