The Mercedes of 2024 marks a handover. There W15 unveiled by the Brackley team, it is Lewis Hamilton’s last before his move to Ferrari and, consequently, marks a handover to George Russell. With the farewell of the 7-time world champion, he will be the new “captain” of the team. Talent and stubbornness, Russell has forcefully entered the top of Formula 1.

All Russell’s talent

He was born in 1998 in King’s Lynn, Norfolk County, England. In the 2019 began racing with Williams, effectively making the leap from the GP3 Series to Formula 1 in just three seasons. After first victories in kartingIn the 2014 Russell won the BRDC Formula 4 championship and the BRC Autosport McLaren award. The English driver also competed in the European Formula 3 championship for two seasons, before winning the GP3 championship as a rookie in 2017 with two races to spare. He made his Formula 2 championship in 2018the best business card to present yourself at the start of your first year in Formula 1.

The 2019 and 2020 seasons in Formula 1

He has talent to spare and Mercedes has followed him carefully. He followed him so much that Russell began to be talked about as a hypothetical replacement for Lewis Hamilton. Eleventh in Germany and twelfth in Brazil – these are his best results – he closes the World Championship 2019 twentieth and without points. The growth is evident, despite some errors: in 2020 ends the season in eighteenth place with three points. The best result is ninth place in the “encore race” in Bahrain. But this placement has nothing to do with Williams…

That race in the Mercedes…

Mercedes believes in Russell so much that they entrusted him with Hamilton’s car, stopped by Covid-19, in the Sakhir GP, while Jack Aitken was called to Williams. It’s the weekend that seems to be able to change the balance of the Brakley team: Russell is second in qualifying 26 thousandths of a gap from the pole won by teammate Valtteri Bottas. In the race the former leads the first half, then ending up at the rear due to a problem when changing tires and a puncture. He recovers up to ninth position. These are the first points scored in his career plus the extra one for setting the fastest lap. Then he returns to Williams to close out his season.

Growth in 2021 and in 2022 the Mercedes dream came true

Russell’s last season on Williams went much better in terms of ranking: fifteenth with 16 points and a podium, second place in Belgium. There are also 4 retirements which obviously did not influence the choice made some time ago by Mercedes for the 2022. A season, the last, between lights and shadows for a car that only in the final part of the championship made life easier for both Lewis and George. But his first year as a starter at Mercedes was decidedly positive: fourth with 275 points, two positions ahead of his teammate.

A complicated 2023 and 2024 to be discovered for “captain future”

L’eighth place with which he closed the 2023 championship certainly did not satisfy George. THE 175 final points, which they saw in the fourth place in Las Vegas the highest point of his season, are too small a haul for a driver with crystalline talent. In 2024 he will necessarily have to prove his worth to try to make the post-Hamilton era less burdensome.
