The SK Rapid women have secured prominent support for their debut season. Former ÖFB team captain Carina Wenninger, who ended her professional career in 2023, will make her comeback on the pitch in Hütteldorf, as the Viennese announced in a press release on Monday. The 127-time team player gives coach Katja Gürtler’s newly formed team a start in the Vienna State League.

This means Wenninger can continue to work at the ÖFB as league manager of the Admiral Women’s Bundesliga. “The fun of football is still huge. The discussions with SK Rapid went very well. It is a great project with long-term, clear plans and optimal framework conditions as well as an infrastructure for women’s football at an international level,” said the 32-year-old Styrian, who was already there at the start of training on Monday.

Wenninger ended her successful professional career in 2022. With 303 appearances, she is the record player for FC Bayern Munich, with whom she became champion three times. At the end she also won the championship title in Italy with AS Roma. In defense of the Austrian national team, she was part of the sensational European Championship semi-finals in 2017 and five years later also in the European Championship quarter-finals.

“With Carina we are not only gaining an outstanding player, but also a lot of experience on and off the pitch. With your commitment we would like to consolidate our position in women’s football. It’s nice that she decided to work with us despite international offers and is convinced of our approach,” said Rapid Sport managing director Steffen Hofmann.

Starting signal in summer

In the summer, after much hesitation, the Green-Whites launched a girls’ soccer department. A year later, the third-tier Vienna State League starts, and Wenninger is now expected to play a “decisive role”.
