Bobby Witt Jr. Signs Record Breaking 11-Year Contract Extension with Kansas City Royals

Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and the Kansas City Royals have agreed to an 11-year contract extension worth US$288.8 million, ESPN reported Monday.

The 23-year-old athlete, who is preparing to play his third season in Major League Baseball, was one of the best players last year, and he convinced the Royals to reward him. Witt will be able to renounce his contract after the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th seasons. The agreement also includes 3 option years at the team’s discretion after the 11th campaign. Ultimately, the contract could be for 14 years and worth around $377 million.

In 2023, Witt averaged .276/.319/.495 with 30 home runs, 49 stolen bases, while excelling on defense. Witt’s contract announcement comes 2 months before a referendum to extend a 3.8 percent tax to fund construction of a new stadium in downtown Kansas City.
