Finding Family and Friendship in the World of Archery

The gaze is pointed towards the horizon, the breath is taken away, the body frozen. Before shooting his arrow, the archer feels alone in the world. “Yes, it’s true, that facing the target, it’s a real individual sport. But there is also a whole life in the club. There is a great conviviality and also a great mutual aid, even in the middle of competition “, insists Amandine Minet, for the Lum’çons, the archers’ association based in Andoy-Wierde. “In the middle of the session, I broke my slats (front parts of the bow). Immediately, other shooters offered to help me out.”

This sport is collective but also, in this specific case, family. Emelyne, the youngest in the family, was the first archer. Basketball player, I had a knee injury. And then, in green class with the school, we had an initiation. And it immediately fascinated me”, smiles the young 16-year-old Andoyenne. “Back home, I pushed my parents to join a club.”

Strength, patience and concentration: Emelyne quickly demonstrated great skills. And his passion has even become contagious. “The competitions are in the four corners of the country”, explains Jean-François, the dad. “You can just as easily go to Welkenraedt as to Antwerp. And when you have to wait four hours for your child, that’s a long time. So, I took up shooting too!” laughs the Andoyen. “But once we reach fifty, we are still less flexible and we have often already adopted bad habits, particularly in body position. But that is not the most important thing…”

Amandine was the last to join the movement. But with some success, too. “In a competition, you fight above all against yourself”, sums up the young girl. “But it’s true that when all three of us are on the ropes, we like to ask ourselves what stitches we’ve just done…” For the father, it is also a great satisfaction to be able to share this same passion with his two grown daughters. “Also, so as not to annoy my wife too much, we don’t talk too much about archery around the table. But before setting off, we always wish each other: good shooting!” A formula that often hits the mark.
