Controversy Continues: Spain-Saudi Partnership for Super Cup and Beyond

MARCA had a meeting with Saudi football officials with whom we spoke about the Spanish Super Cup, whose celebration in Saudi continues to be a source of controversy… and will continue to be so with the imminent elections to the RFEF and the contract that was signed by former president Luis Rubiales to hold that competition there until 2029.

The Saudis, as they told us directlythey plan to continue with what was signed without cracks, because, among other things, “the Super Cup – they say – is only part of the agreement signed with the Spanish Federation.”

The fact that, most likely, In 2025, Barça will not be present does not alter Saudi plans. “What is signed…is signed,” they say.

The Super Cup has already had four editions in the Middle East, at a rate of about 40 million for each of them. Rubiales guaranteed 240 million euros in the first agreement closed, although it was later extended until 2029.

The rest of the collaboration includes, for example, the training of about 30 young Saudis each year in Spain. It is the ‘Future Falcons’ program for under-19 footballers who live for nine months in Salou (Tarragona) with comprehensive training.

Also there have been joint meetings (the last one a few weeks ago in Switzerland) to analyze what is coming in both countries: the 2030 World Cup in Spain and the 2034 World Cup in Saudi. “We will learn from the experience of Spain and, in the process, Let’s hope that the Spanish tiqui-taca rubs off on us a little“, the Saudis tell us with a smile.

ThereforeLong live this Spain-Saudi partnership.
