Clayton Kershaw Returns: Dodgers Count on Star Pitcher for 2024 Season

The Los Angeles Dodgers will have to wait a bit, but they will count on two of the best pitchers in history in great shape due to the confirmed return of prolific Clayton Kershaw.

The 35-year-old American will return for a 17th season with the City of Angels team. He accepted a one-year contract with an option for 2025 which would guarantee him $10 million according to The Athletic website. With bonuses linked to the number of starts, he could receive up to $12 million during the coming season.

Kershaw could return to play in the second half of the season, towards the end of July or the beginning of August, he himself told the media on Thursday. The three-time Cy Young Trophy winner underwent surgery on his left shoulder on November 3.

The Dodgers will have to do without Kershaw and Shohei Ohtani on the mound for many months. The Japanese will not pitch in 2024, but will nevertheless appear at bat. Both men should have a significant impact on the rest of the team during the season.

The two Gunners had teased each other before, notably at the 2022 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Before going to the plate, Ohtani predicted that he would hit a hit on Kershaw’s first pitch against him. The $700 million man had actually managed a single… before being pulled out by the veteran while he was standing a little too far from the first base.

Despite his few health problems, Kershaw showed in 2023 that he was still part of the elite of his sport. The curveball master went 13-5 with a 2.46 ERA in 24 starts.
