Bucks Embarrass Themselves in Memphis, Warriors Survive Wild Finish in Utah

The Milwaukee Bucks really embarrassed themselves at the Memphis Grizzlies, and coach Doc Rivers was upset after the game. The Golden State Warriors survive a wild final phase in Utah, Klay Thompson gives the right answer after his benching.

Memphis Grizzlies (20-36) – Milwaukee Bucks (35-21) 113:110 (BOXSCORE)

  • Ouch, dear Bucks! In the last game before the All-Star break, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Co. embarrassed themselves in Memphis, who once again only had nine players available and competed with a better G League squad. Even 35 points (15/17 FG) and 12 assists from Antetokounmpo weren’t enough for the Bucks, who have now lost seven of ten games under Doc Rivers.
  • The last possession session was emblematic for the Bucks, when Milwaukee could have sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer. However, Damian Lillard (24, 7/21, 7 assists) almost lost the ball at the halfway line, but the clock was running down and the All-Star had to take an emergency throw from the halfway line, but it clearly missed its target. Malik Beasley (9, 3/10 3P) had previously made things exciting again with two threes in a row.
  • For the Grizzlies, GG Jackson (27, 10/17 FG, 6/10 3P) and Ziaire Williams (27, 9/13) were the best scorers, with Vince Williams Jr. (18, 7/11, 12 rebounds, 7 assists) with a triple-double. Jaren Jackson Jr. was missing this time, and of course there were other long-term injuries such as Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Marcus Smart and Brandon Clarke. Luke Kennard was missing for a short time with a knee problem.
  • Bucks coach Rivers was satisfied after the game: “Some guys were there, the others were already in Cabo.”

Utah Jazz (26-30) – Golden State Warriors (27-26) 137:140 (BOXSCORE)

  • The Warriors also win the second game in Utah, but in the end there was a lot of shaking. A good four minutes before the end, the Dubs were still leading with +12, but Lauri Markkanen (20, 6/23 FG, 14 rebounds) shot the hosts back into the game with two three-pointers and a few seconds before the end the lead was 13:2 -Just run one more point. Markkanen missed the lead from downtown, but the good John Collins (18, 13 rebounds) had the offensive rebound. Then he threw the ball into nothing and Stephen Curry converted the free throws to win.
  • The story from the Warriors’ perspective was the benching of Klay Thompson, who had to make room for rookie Brandin Podziemski (13, 5/12, 8 assists). But Thompson showed the right reaction and scored 35 points (13/22 FG, 7/13 3P), 18 of them in the third quarter. Klay hit four three-pointers in four minutes. Curry (16, 4/14, 10 assists), on the other hand, remained mostly pale, while Draymond Green scored 23 points (9/14).
  • Utah countered with hot shooting, 22 of 49 three-pointers went through the net. Rookie Keyonte George (33, 11/22) converted nine three-pointers, and Collin Sexton added 35 points (10/18). However, the Jazz’s 16 turnovers hurt, and the Warriors took advantage of this to score a whopping 29 points.

Portland Trail Blazers (15-39) – Minnesota Timberwolves (39-16) 91:128 (BOXSCORE)

  • Unchallenged victory for the Wolves, who won the first quarter 44:14 (!) and were only in a bit of trouble briefly in the third period. Anthony Edwards (34, 12/31, 7 assists) then briefly turned things around and restored the double-digit lead. As a result, things no longer became exciting and the starters were able to comfortably watch from the bench.
  • Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 23 points (8/13) to the success, Rudy Gobert (11, 12 rebounds) had a double-double. Minnesota held Portland to 37 percent from the field, the best scorer for the hosts was Jerami Grant (20, 6/14). Anfernee Simons (12, 4/15), on the other hand, failed to find a rhythm and Scoot Henderson (15, 5/12, 4 assists) also remained rather pale as a starter.
