Madrid’s Galavotti Takes Gold at 2024 South American Veterans Judo Championship

Organized by the South American Judo Confederation and the Argentine Judo ConfederationLast weekend, the 2024 South American Veterans Judo Championship took place at the Hotel Mónaco in Villa Carlos Paz, a competition in which competitors from all over Argentina, as well as from different neighboring countries and even those from England, took part.

A group of competitors from Chubut were part of this South American Judo Veterans, among whom stood out the Madrynense Giuliano Galavottiwhich managed to win the gold medal in its M2 category from 35 to 39 years old.

Galavotti defeated his Ecuadorian counterpart in the final of the South American Veterans Championship, about which the man from Madrid explained: “he was a very strong competitor. They have competition every weekend. What’s more, they came from the South American and a week later they had their National, while for us this is the first tournament of the year.”

“In the third fight it was more thoughtful, more planned. I was able to get an ippon from him and that’s where I came first,” Galavotti analyzed how his participation in the South American veterans event took place and that he became champion in his category.

Galavotti said at the same time that “I felt a terrible emotion, because these tournaments are very expensive, with registrations in dollars. Everything is at our expense. I traveled with my dad (Oscar), who is my sensei, with my brother who was the driver and cook. He was very emotional, very familiar. Judo shows that, that it is family,” said the judoka representative of the Madryn Judo School regarding this important achievement in his sports career.

In addition to Galavotti, there were competitors from Comodoro Rivadavia

The judokas Julio Carez, Leonardo Smart, Luis Hernández and Shabick Lemus fought in the international competition that was held in Villa Carlos Paz and brought medals to Comodoro Rivadavia, who competed in close battles against athletes from our country, Chile, Ecuador and Brazil.

In addition to Galavotti, Chubut was represented by judokas from Comodoro Rivadavia, who also performed great, winning medals.

Carez won the gold medal in the M3-81kg category; Lemus came second in the M1-60kg category; Smart won the bronze medal in M4+100kg; and Hernández placed third in M3-81kg. For his part, Giuliano Galavotti from Madrid won gold in the M2-60kg category, and Diego Vivas (Caleta Olivia) took bronze in VN-66kg.

The next challenges for the veterans are the Pan American Judo Championships in Colombia in September and the World Judo Championships in Las Vegas in November. In addition to official national events, such as the Centro República International Championship in August and the National Clausura in November.
