BSN Teams Strengthening Rosters for Upcoming Season

With just under two months to go before the next season of the National Superior Basketball (BSN) begins, several teams continue to make important moves with hopes of placing themselves in a more favorable position to capture the long-awaited championship.

At this time of year, franchises begin to announce who their two reinforcements will be for the upcoming campaign and this time has been no exception. In fact, the Quebradillas Pirates revealed yesterday that they will import the giant Tacko Fall and Emmanuel Mudiay. This, after having the stellar reinforcement duo of Hassan Whiteside and Brandon Knight last year.

The new general manager of the Pirates, Alfredo “Piranha” Morales, confirmed to Primera Hora that Whiteside will not be part of the team this season because he intends to retire from basketball. However, he stated that Knight is still in the team’s plans and they anticipate being able to count on him as soon as he finishes his season in Greece with the AEK Athens club. The last regular series games of the Greek professional basketball league will be played on May 23.

On the other hand, others that have made a lot of noise are the Atléticos de San Germán and the Mets de Guaynabo after their change of imports. San Germán sent forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson to Guaynabo for the rights of Australian Mitch Creek. The trade was one that took many by surprise, as Hollis-Jefferson had become a fan favorite of the A’s and led them to their first finals in 25 years. However, he requested a salary increase and San Germán chose to transfer him.

Despite this, Athletics manager Eddie Casiano will once again have explosive point guard Nate Mason in his ranks. According to the agent José “Cheo†Rivera, Mason will be joining the team in mid-May. For this reason, he will start the season with Bryon Allen.

Meanwhile, the Captains of Arecibo reinforced the ship with David Stockton and Jahil Okafor. Stockton averaged 19.5 points and 6.6 assists last season with the Cangrejeros de Santurce and over the past few years he has established himself as one of the strongest point guards in the league. Along with him will be Okafor, a center who was selected with the third pick in the NBA Rookie Draft in 2015. Currently, he is active in China with the Zhejiang Lios, where he has 12 points and six rebounds in 23 games.

On the other hand, the Mayagüez Indians announced at the end of January that one of their imports will be the 7′0″ center, Willey Cauley-Stein. During eight years in the NBA, he averaged 8.7 points and 5.9 sacks. At the moment, he is playing with the club Pallacanestro Venese in Italy’s Serie A.

In the capital, Kenneth Faried will return as an import from the Cangrejeros, after reaching an agreement with the franchise in October. Last year Faried recorded 14 points and 12 rebounds with Santurce.

The Osos de Manatí, Leones de Ponce, Santeros de Aguada, Gigantes de Carolina, Criollos de Caguas and Vaqueros de Bayamón have not yet revealed who will be their imports for the upcoming tournament.

But, the Lions’ representative, Oscar Misla, told this newspaper that there are high possibilities that his two reinforcements will be a center and a point guard, a formula that seems to be a trend in the BSN. Misla said they plan to report in mid-March the two imported from him. Also, he maintained that they could start the season with a reinforcement and replace him with another during the course of the campaign.

The BSN season is scheduled to begin on April 2.
