Arthur Fils: A Rising Tennis Star Facing Challenges on the Court

Semi‐finalist in Auckland at the start of the season then eliminated in the second round of the Australian Open, Arthur Fils has since lost his two matches on clay in South America, in Buenos Aires and Rio.

While the 19-year-old Frenchman will face the Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first round in Santiago this Wednesday evening, journalist Benoît Maylin expressed concern about his state of form in a column published by Winamax.

“You haven’t seen Arthur Son?” Because it’s been over a month since he last won a match and in our instantaneous world, four weeks is an eternity. Especially since last year, we only had his name on our lips. Son here, Son there, Son in the semi‐finals in Montpellier and Marseille, 18 years old and already top 100, crazy! But that was a year ago. Today we are only talking about Jakub Mensik, also 18 years old who has just made the final in Doha while the Czech is 166th in the world. And we’re going crazy over Joao Fonseca, 17, a quarter-finalist in Rio at home while the Brazilian was 655th. And what’s more, he gave Arthur Fils a 6–0. No but oh! It’s true that it’s growing at the gate but Arthur Fils must confirm. He’s a year older, it’s not the same pressure. He is 44th and at 19 years old, he and Alcaraz are still the youngest in the top 50. He took the risk of playing on clay in South America with a view to training for the Olympics. For now, it’s zero, but tomorrow? »
