Acapulco Rollercoaster: Alexander Zverev Faces Elimination After Early Setback

Acapulco remains a tournament of extremes for Alexander Zverev. Celebrated tournament winner, reprimanded bully – when the German number one hits the Mexican Pacific coast, there’s always something going on. This time the 26-year-old Olympic champion suffered a serious setback and was eliminated in his first appearance.

The top seed from Hamburg, who had previously reached the semi-finals in Melbourne and Los Cabos and had demonstrated convincing early form overall, lost the German duel with Daniel Altmaier at the start with 3:6, 6:3, 3:6.

Altmaier used his first match point after 2:25 hours and celebrated his biggest victory in terms of the world rankings. “This victory means a lot to me,” said the Kempen native, who will now face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.

Altmaier and Koepfer are looking ahead to the next challenge
