On Saturday Jannik Sinner took part in the Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid. After the bye in the first round, he quickly swept his friend Lorenzo Sonego off the field in the second.

On Saturday afternoon at 12.45 p.m. Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego entered the clay court in Madrid. For the South Tyrolean, this meant the start of the Madrid Open, which is one of the tournaments in the Masters 1000 category and promises the winner prize money of almost one million euros. On one possible path to this, the 22-year-old was blocked by a man who has been a good friend of Sinner’s for years. However, the world number 2 had no mercy for him. The Sexten player swept Sonego off the pitch like a hurricane and won 6:0 and 6:3 in just 70 minutes. This meant that Sinner made an incredible 13-0 overall in the duel with players from Italy.

You don’t see a 6-0 score every day in tennis. But anyone who followed the first sentence between Sinner and Sonego was not surprised by this result. Sinner played excellent tennis, controlled every rally and hit balls worthy of a world number 2. In short: The Sesto native really gave the Turiner a run for his money and only needed 26 minutes to bag the first set. Obviously, Sinner’s effective return game needs to be highlighted, as Sonego’s serve never really gave the Italian an advantage.

Sonego then won his first service game in the second set to make the score 1-1. But this was nothing more than a small wobble for Sinner, as he immediately got another break in the next service game. Not much more was possible for Sonego. Although he shortened the quality distance between Sinner and himself somewhat in the second set, the Azzurro never really saw land. After 44 minutes, the Sexten player won the second set unchallenged 6:3.

In the third round Sinner will now face either Pavel Kotov (ATP 72) from Russia or the Australian Jordan Thompson (ATP33).
