The Basics of Badminton: Rules, Equipment, and Court Dimensions

Badminton is a racket sport in which two players or two couples compete against each other.

Unlike other racket sports, badminton is not played with a ball, but with a projectile called a shuttlecock, fly or feather, which consists of a semisphere (like a ball) surrounded at its base by feathers. Such a design offers aerodynamic resistance to the projectile’s path, providing cadence to the movements and preventing its deflection in case of wind. Also competitions are held indoors.

RACKET

The badminton racket is very light (90-140 grams). This is essential, since the steering wheel is so light that it must be hit with a tension and direction that can only be achieved using almost only the wrist.

The rackets are made of wood (the oldest), aluminum, graphite, and other more modern and lighter materials.

The weight of the racket depends on the preferences of the player who uses it, and the money they spend on it.

PARTIES.

The racket is divided into three parts: head, trunk or shaft, and handle.

Head. It is generally oval in shape. This part is what you hit the steering wheel with.

Rod. It is the part that connects the head to the handle. It measures approximately 20 cm. It is extremely thin (compared to other types of rackets).

Mango. It is the part of the racket used to grip it. It is usually made of wood covered with some type of fabric tape so as not to hurt our hands and so that the racket does not slip.

TYPES.

Three-piece racket: This type of assembly is the oldest and worst, since it takes away a lot of flexibility from the racket, in addition to adding extra weight.

Two-piece racket: This racket is more flexible than the three-piece racket but more rigid than the one-piece racket.

One piece racket. There are apparently no assembly additions to be seen. At first glance, it appears that the contour of the head and trunk is a single rod, and this widens to form the handle. It is the most flexible racket.

STEERING WHEEL

The shuttlecock must weigh between 4.74 and 5.50 grams, and has 16 6 cm feathers. in length that are fixed to a 25 to 28 mm cork base. in diameter that has a spherical shape in the hitting area. There are two types of shuttlecocks, the feather one, which is used by advanced level players for official competitions, and the nylon one, more appropriate for beginners, school competitions and for recreational badminton.

LOCKER ROOM

It is advisable that the t-shirt or polo be made of cotton that absorbs sweat and facilitates body perspiration. In competition the use of shorts is mandatory. For people who sweat excessively, the wardrobe can be supplemented with terry elastic bands for the wrists and forehead. They retain sweat and prevent it from entering the hands or eyes. The sports footwear to be used must be light, with an indoor sole and with good insoles, which must be changed from time to time to avoid the chafing that occurs when moving, changing direction and sudden braking and rapid starts (starts). common in badminton.

The official measurements of a badminton field or court are:

 For individuals: 13 m. long x 5 m wide

 For doubles: 13 m long x 6 m wide.

The network is located in the middle of the rectangle. A network with 760 mm. wide x 6 m. long at least.

This net is placed between two 1.55 meter high posts. These posts must be rigid.

All painted lines will have a minimum of 40 mm. thick. The normal thing is to paint them white, but other colors such as yellow or red are allowed.

The important thing is that it contrasts with the color of the floor, which is generally green or bluish. And remember, the lines are considered inside the track.

The width of the court is divided into 4 halves. At the ends there are two 0.42 m stripes that mark the difference between the double or single court. And in the center two zones of 2.53 meters to delimit the left and right serving zone.

The service zone is framed between the long service line and the short service line. The long line is located at 0.72 m. of the baseline. And the short service line is 1.98 m
