Niclas Füllkrug’s Penalty Denial: A Win for Borussia Dortmund and Jadon Sancho

“And that was the right thing to do” Füllkrug allows Sancho to be denied at the penalty spot

Left out at Manchester United, immediately important again at Borussia Dortmund: Jadon Sancho’s return is a win for both sides. The Englishman would have liked to score his first goal in the clear win in Cologne. Niclas Füllkrug gives insight into why he did not fulfill this wish.

Everyone is looking at Jadon Sancho, but sometimes the returnee has to take a back seat at Borussia Dortmund. “He wanted to too, but I scored in the end, and that was the right thing to do,” said national player Niclas Füllkrug, referring to the important penalty in the game at 1. FC Köln. Sancho had taken him out, Sancho then practically begged for the ball – but Füllkrug scored to make it 2-0, and in the end it was 4-0 (1-0) for BVB.

The next win against a relegation candidate, Dortmund is fully on target after the winter break, and that is also due to the strong Sancho. “Of course he wanted to score his first goal since returning, but believe me, that will come soon enough,” said Füllkrug with a grin. There was by no means a dispute between the two over the event. “He just asked if it was okay if he shot,” reported Füllkrug: “I said: No, I’ll do it today. Then he immediately agreed and said: All right, then hit him “fullness.”

Füllkrug referred to a clear ranking for penalty shooting. “We have a clear process,” confirmed coach Edin Terzić: “We also wanted to learn a little from the past. You probably know what I’m getting at.” Terzić was probably thinking about the last matchday of the preseason, when captain Emre Can was left out as a regular shooter in favor of Sébastien Haller. But Haller missed and in the end, a goal was missing from the 2-2 draw against Mainz to secure the German championship title.

“Two or three more games”

Sancho, who was not happy at Manchester United after his BVB departure, cannot fuel championship hopes this season. Bayer Leverkusen are 15 points ahead of league leaders, and in fifth place Dortmund are currently outside the Champions League places. Sancho has also arrived to secure the top four spot. The loan player also works the same. “You can already see his quality, it’s extremely noticeable in training,” says Füllkrug, “if he gets two or three more games, he’s almost a guaranteed scorer.”

Sancho has already been that way so far, and he also prepared a goal as a joker at Darmstadt 98 (3-0). “Whatever he can do, you either have it or you don’t have it. And he has it,” says captain Gregor Kobel about the extremely fast, agile newcomer: “He is a great asset because he can always create opportunities.”

The 23-year-old can also score, as he demonstrated extensively during his first time at BVB (2017 to 2021). Sancho scored 50 goals in almost 140 competitive games at the time. And the next thing, said Füllkrug, the new guy could do “next week.” The Black and Yellows host their district neighbors VfL Bochum in Dortmund late on Sunday afternoon before traveling to 1. FC Heidenheim on Friday evening at the beginning of February.
