The first of three World Cup stages of the season was held this week in Shanghai (China). Thomas Chirault placed fourth in the individual event, after reaching the semi-finals and then losing the bronze medal match on Sunday. But this remains an encouraging result three months before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (July 26 – August 11).
Valladont and Addis beaten in round of 16
Chirault (26 years old) successively eliminated the German Mathias Kramer (6-0) in the round of 32, then the Turk Berkay Akkoyun (6-4), the Taiwanese Lin Zih-siang (6-5) and finally the Spaniard Ken Sanchez Antoku (6-4). In the semi-finals, the Frenchman fell against another Spaniard, Andres Temino (6-4), future winner, then against the South Korean Kim Woo-jin (6-2), Olympic team champion in 2021 and former champion of the individual world (2011 and 2015), for third place.
Concerning the other French archers, Jean-Charles Valladont was beaten in the round of 16 by Temino (6-5). Baptiste Addis also lost in the round of 16, against the South Korean Kim Je-deok (6-2), also Olympic team champion in 2021 (and mixed team gold medalist). Finally, Nicolas Bernardi fell in the round of 32 against the Indonesian Riau Ega Agata Salsabilla (6-2).
Lopez takes out German Michelle Kroppen
Among the women, Lisa Barbelin, the French n°1, was eliminated in the round of 16 by the German Elisa Tartler (6-4), after leading 4-0. Amélie Cordeau and Caroline Lopez fell at the same level, against the Chinese Li Jiaman (6-0) and the South Korean Jeon Hunyoung (6-0). In the round of 16, Lopez had a great performance, defeating the German Michelle Kroppen (6-4), world and European team champion.
The last Frenchwoman in the running, Victoria Sebastian lost in the 16th round against Barbelin (6-1). In the team events, among the men, the Blues were dominated in the round of 16 by Italy (5-1), and the women in the quarter by Indonesia (5-2). Finally in a mixed team, Lisa Barbelin and Baptiste Addis lost in the round of 16 against the Iranian pair Mobina Fallah – Faez Mohammadizardkhaneh (5-1).
