Maxence Vanderheyden to Defend Amboise in Regional Amateur Boxing Championships

Saturday January 20, 2024, Amboise will host the finals of the regional amateur boxing championships at the Claude-Ménard gymnasium. Among the contenders for a regional crown, welterweight Maxence Vanderheyden will defend the colors of the city of Amboise.

The only representative of the Ambois Boxing Academy (after Jimmy Nouvellon’s withdrawal), Maxence started boxing two years ago: “I went there to discover recreational boxing, to resume a sporting activity, to rework on cardio because it had been a while since I had stopped sport. ».

“Respect between boxers”

A sportsman at heart, Maxence started with judo. “When I was little, I was hyperactive, but judo wasn’t suitable because I couldn’t let off steam. » He abandoned judo and walked the football fields for ten years.

It was when he entered the La Riche Boxing Club that he discovered boxing, with Brian Macé. He stayed there for a year before joining the Ambois Boxing Academy. “What made me love boxing was the respect between the boxers at the end of the fight », explains the young man.

Maxence had the opportunity to meet Enzo Grau, a Vendéen who has just turned professional. “I had the chance to meet him in a ring in his room. I trained with his father, it was a great experience. It motivated me to meet high-level boxers. » Maxence is determined, he is working to gain experience to progress to hopeful then elite, the highest level of amateur competition.

An illustrious trainer in the family

It was only after starting in the world of boxing that Maxence discovered that one of his cousins, Gaëtan Micallef, was an emblematic trainer of French boxing at Red Star Audon (Paris region).

Since he put on the gloves, Maxence has been emulated in his family. His two little brothers follow in his footsteps. The youngest is already competing in the cadet category.

By the end of the school year, Maxence will compete in the French university championships (where he will compete in three fights, which will bring him closer to the elite level). Outside of boxing, the young man is pursuing a master’s degree in geography. Afterwards, he plans to pursue a career in the navy.

On January 20, it will be his fifth fight. He remains on two consecutive victories after two defeats for his competitive debut. “I am proud to represent my club and the city of Amboise” concludes the boxer.

Saturday January 20, 2024, at the Claude-Ménard gymnasium, 22, rue du Clos-des-gardes. Fights start at 2:30 p.m. Prices: €10; €8.
