The European Games in Krakow get underway with today’s opening ceremony at 8.30pm (live streaming on Italia Team’s OTT). Italy’s archery will be the protagonist already this evening with Mauro Nespoli who has been chosen as standard bearer together with judoka Odette Giuffrida. Archery competitions will begin on Friday with the possibility for recurve archers to also qualify for the next Paris Olympics.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION
The European Games in Krakow, in fact, are also valid as a continental Olympic qualification for archery. At stake are the first individual cards for Paris 2024 and there will be two ways to obtain them: win gold in the mixed team or get on the podium in the individual competitions, both men’s and women’s. For team passes, however, the key event in view of the French five-ring event will be at the beginning of August in Berlin where the next World Championships will take place.
THE COMPETITION PROGRAM
There will be a total of seven days of archery competitions at the European Games. We start on Friday 23 June with the qualifications of both the recurve and the compound followed by the first two elimination rounds of the mixed teams. Saturday will see the Olympic teams on the field with all the matches one after the other, as in the Olympics there will be no challenges at the same time, until the finals for gold are reached. The day will have a tail dedicated to the round of 16 of the women’s compound. Other medals up for grabs on Sunday, those of the mixed team in both recurve and compound, a specialty which will also see the men on the field for the individual round of 16. On Monday and Tuesday the first two elimination rounds of the men’s and women’s Olympics, on Wednesday match up to the women’s finals of the recurve and compound. Thursday 29 June last day of competitions with the challenges that will lead to the awarding of the men’s Olympic and compound medals.
THE AZURRI CALLED UP
Eight Azzurri present in Krakow. In the men’s Olympic competition, a call-up for Mauro Nespoli (Aeronautica Militare), fresh winner of gold in the World Cup in Medellin, together with him there will be Federico Musolesi (Aeronautica Militare) and Alessandro Paoli (Fiamme Azzurre), a trio that has already won the European title in the past. The reserve at home is Michele Frangilli (Air Force).
In the women’s section, there is space for the three archers who participated in the last Tokyo Olympics: Lucilla Boari, who won a historic bronze in Japan, Tatiana Andreoli and Chiara Rebagliati, all archers working for the Fiamme Oro. The reserve at home is the young Roberta Di Francesco (Arcieri Abruzzesi).
In the compound, representing Italy will be Marco Bruno (Arcieri Iuvenilia), who obtained his pass for the European Games at the beginning of April during the European Grand Prix in which he put two medals around his neck, and Elisa Roner (Kosmos Rovereto), capable two months ago of winning bronze in the first stage of the World Cup in Antalya, Turkey.
LIVE STREAMING OF THE EUROPEAN GAMES
The Krakow races will be broadcast live on Italia Team’s OTT, a streaming service provided by CONI. In addition to archery, images of all the other sports will be available for a total of 80 hours of live broadcast in which all 331 Italian athletes present in Krakow will be the protagonists.
ITALY AT THE LATEST EUROPEAN GAMES
Italy was the absolute protagonist of archery at the last European Games held in Minsk in 2019. The Azzurri took home 5 medals (3 gold, one silver and one bronze) taking first place in the medal table for Nations. In the men’s individual recurve competition Mauro Nespoli won gold, in the women’s the podium was almost all blue with Andreoli first and Boari second. Italy also achieved gold in the mixed team with the Nespoli-Boari duo. Target achieved in the team competition with the bronze medal for the men’s team made up of Nespoli, Galiazzo and Pasqualucci.
