CIS gender equality perception survey, 41% of men believe they are discriminated against

BarcelonaAlmost half of the men in Spain, specifically 44.1%, consider that gender equality “has gone too far”, to the point that they are now the ones being discriminated against. This perception is shared by just under a third of women, 32.5%, who report that feminist advances have made men the losers.

The data are the result of the first survey carried out by the Center for Sociological Research (CIS) on the perception of equality policies and gender stereotypes, based on 4,500 people interviewed over the age of 16. The work shows that it is men who mostly, 48%, believe that the gender gap is almost non-existent, while when women are asked, 67% think that the inequalities are “very big or big enough “, so more needs to be done to reduce them. Some have noted that in the last decade there have been advances towards equality, although, once again, men have a more optimistic view because three quarters consider that there is more equality now than ten years ago years, compared to two thirds (67%) of women.

In relation to how feminism is perceived, 10.3% of men declare themselves “not feminist at all”, by 7% of women, while only 5.8% say they are “very feminist”, compared to 16 .1% of the female population. On a scale of feminism from 0 to 10, men are at 5.77 and women at 6.74.

“Nice” comments

The researchers have asked what they think about “flowers” or “throwing flowers”, a harassment behavior that is expressly penalized by the new comprehensive law guaranteeing sexual freedom or law of the only yes is yes. Half of the men say that receiving unsolicited comments about their physique is pleasant, a percentage that drops to 35.7% among the women surveyed.

The Penal Code includes as a crime expressions, behavior or propositions of a sexual nature that humiliate or intimidate the person who receives them. The punishment is equivalent to an insult of a minor nature, sanctioned with between one and four months of fine, work for the benefit of the community or a penalty of permanent location for a maximum of one month.

The CIS survey finds that there are many gender stereotypes related to work, sexuality or care. More than half of respondents (52.6% of men and 51.3% of women) indicate that equality in the world of work depends more on women than on any law. However, 78% of women argue that they have to work harder than men to show that they can have the same job, an opinion shared by only 51.8% of men. There is also a notable difference of opinion regarding the situation that girls have to access a position of responsibility: while three quarters of women say they are at a disadvantage, only half of the men make the same diagnosis.

When it comes to balancing work and family life, three quarters of women admit that they have it worse than men. It is the women who have to extend the day when they get home, because they are in charge of the household chores, such as shopping, cleaning or cooking. Women spend an average of three hours a day on these tasks, one more than men. Finally, if the question is who looks after the children on a weekday, the gap widens: women spend 6.7 hours, three more than men.
