Bayern can hope for playoffs

FC Bayern Munich can once again hope for the playoffs of the Basketball Euroleague. The Bundesliga club won against the Spanish club Saski Baskonia on Tuesday after extra time with 112:109 (94:94, 56:52) and secured their tenth success in the 24th game of the season. The gap to tenth place is currently two wins. Former NBA professional Serge Ibaka was Bayern’s best shooter with 21 points.

After only one win from the last six Euroleague games, the Munich team got into the game well. Coach Pablo Laso’s team led 25:19 after ten minutes. Bayern were able to narrowly defend their lead until the break. 14 points from Ibaka gave the team a 56:52 lead.

In the third round, victory seemed certain after an 8-0 spurt. But after the 64:54 (24th minute), the guests from the Basque Country countered and reduced the score to two points (71:73/28th).

In the final period, the Munich team lost 89:80 and had to go into extra time after the Spaniards equalized two seconds before the end of regular time. In extra time, Nick Weiler-Babb decided the match for the Laso team with a successful three-point throw and Carsen Edwards with two free throws.

Alba is defeated by Olympiacos

When reuniting with his former captain Luke Sikma, the second German participant Alba Berlin suffered a clear 87:101 (48:45) defeat in Greece at Olympiacos Piraeus. Without world champion Johannes Thiemann (bruised lumbar spine) in the squad, nothing could be achieved.

For Alba, who lost to Würzburg Baskets in the Bundesliga on Sunday (75:76), with five wins and now 19 defeats, getting into the play-offs is unrealistic and will soon no longer be mathematically possible.
