Evidence Makgopa (57′) and Teboho Mokoena (95’/free kick) shot South Africa into the next round and team boss Walid Regragui’s team out of the tournament. PSG star Achraf Hakimi missed a great chance to equalize in the 84th minute and hit the crossbar with a hand penalty. The “Lions of the Atlas” therefore have to wait for their second continental title after the one in 1976. South Africa, on the other hand, will play against Cape Verde on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals.

Mali previously took a 2-0 lead thanks to an own goal from Edmond Tapsoba (3rd) and a goal from Lassine Sinayoko (47th), Bertrand Traore could only reduce the lead (57th). Salzburg striker Sekou Koita was substituted for Mali in the 74th minute, while his club colleague Dorgeles Nene sat on the bench. The quarter-finals start on Friday with the games Nigeria against Angola and Congo against Guinea.
