World Champion Judo Master Fights Off Gang in Robbery Attempt

Genoa – They hid and waited for the man to come out of the restaurant to attack and rob him. Three against one, impossible to fail they thought. Also because it was late at night and there wasn’t a soul around. A perfect plan, if it weren’t for one small detail: the gang’s victim was the Genoese (who grew up in via Buranello, Sampierdarena) Bruno Danovaro. Martial arts master and world champion of judo and powerlifting, the discipline based on three weight lifts (squat, bench press and deadlift).

In the end the trio not only left empty-handed, but had to run away to avoid unpleasant consequences. «I would never have hit them – explains Danovaro -, I did it two years ago in Milan (three nomads who had attacked him while he was coming off his shift as a Red Cross volunteer were hospitalized, ed.) and I almost ended up on trial. Instead they didn’t report me. This time I defended myself, but someone on the ground ended up there anyway.”

Telling what happened last night, and promising that he will file a complaint with the police (“I’m doing it because they could harm someone”) is the world champion himself (his personal score is 144 victories): “I I had dinner at the “A Lanterna” tavern in Don Gallo (in Dinegro) and I was late because I stopped to talk to the guys who work there. My driver was waiting for me a hundred meters ahead in the car and I set off to catch up with her. After a few steps, however, I heard a shot and a boy appeared from a corner and asked for my wallet, threatening to hurt me if I refused.” Danovaro lets a few moments pass, but instead of the money he punches the criminal in the stomach, who as expected ends up on the ground. The champion – in addition to judo he has achieved successes in the disciplines karate, kyokushinkay and jujitsu – is also ready to defend himself from the assault of his accomplices, who had positioned themselves behind his friend. However, the couple runs away.

«I didn’t chase them because there was no need – concludes the teacher – and also because the one who had fallen to the ground was getting up again. I thought he wanted to react, but instead he disappeared.” Danovaro only defended himself: «If they had attacked my driver it would have ended differently», he assures. And she doesn’t have a hard time believing him: in the summer of 2022 she stopped two boys who had molested two girls of the same age in a park in Milan.
