Celebrating Excellence: The Return of the Victoires du Sport

The glory day
OMNISPORTS. After several months of preparation and no less than thirteen years of waiting since the last edition, the Victoires du Sport are making their big return this evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Cité des Arts in Saint-Denis. Organized by the Regional Olympic Committee (CROS) in partnership with the company Ilop Sport, the event rewards athletes who have achieved the best performances throughout 2023. “It’s important to show the vitality of Reunion sport through its greatest successes”, pleaded Claude Villendeuil, the president of CROS, in our columns at the beginning of the month. No less than eleven categories will be in the running this evening for which three athletes, with the exception of the club of the year and volunteers, have been nominated by a jury made up of personalities from the sports movement and sports journalists. All categories as well as the list of nominees are available on the site victoriesdusport.re.

Velleyen commits to Cherbourg
BASKETBALL. After having had a good time in Tarbes, where she played with the NF2 team last year, Zarah Velleyen signed up with USLG Cherbourg (N1F) at the next school year. Passed by CS Portois, the youth center of Reunion as well as Echan Chalon with which she became champion of France group B, the Reunion playmaker had a 2023/2024 season rich in a title of champion of France university NF2 and a silver medal acquired at the Indian Ocean Islands Games.

A good vintage
JUDO. Four judokas from Reunion will head to the mainland at the start of the next school year to begin their rise to the high level in one of the six French judo centers. Tyvan Vergnet (Port Dojo) and Kayzie Mohamed Hachim (JCM Saint-Denis) are expected in Bordeaux while Ismaël Abdallah (JCM Saint-Denis) not Kylian Tergemina (JCM Saint-Denis) will go to Orléans and Marseille respectively.

Occitanie as a distinguished guest
KARATE. As part of an exchange, the CKF Réunion club and the Réunion Karate League are welcoming, all this week, a delegation of karatekas from the Occitanie League. After training scheduled yesterday, at 5 p.m., at the regional dojo of Champ Fleuri, an international tournament, for the minimal, cadet, junior, senior and team categories, will be held this Saturday at the Casabona gymnasium, in Saint-Pierre. On this occasion, the CKF club has decided to give an international dimension to the event which will include, in addition to Occitan karatekas, practitioners from Mayotte and Mauritius. The competition will start from 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Duels at the top
VOLLEYBALL. The preliminary phases are coming to an end. After nine days played since mid-March, the six teams selected in Regional A will have to decide today at the top of the ranking. For the men’s teams of Saint-Denis Olympique and Tampon GV, accession to the semi-finals is already assured while this match against their best rivals will allow them to designate the leader of Regional A and store up confidence before tough matches. Their opponents for the semi-finals have not yet been determined. Among the women, the Sparrow VP can still beat VB Saint-Pierre if it wins against VBC Saint-Denis and the Saint-Pierroises lose their match against VB2CO. For the boys, the semi-finalists are already known (TGV, SDOVB, VBC Saint-Leu and VBC Saint-Denis) but the posters can still evolve depending on the results of this last day.
