Vlhova Snatches Victory from Shiffrin in Courchevel Slalom

Comeback victory for Petra Vhlova, who beats Mikaela Shiffrin and takes the night slalom in Courchevel, France, as her own. A well-deserved success for the Slovakian, who also did Federica Brignone and Sofia Goggia a favor, “limiting” the points won in the overall World Cup ranking by the stars and stripes champion: only 80, instead of the 100 that she would have gained with victory. Third place for the Austrian Katharina Truppe.

Women’s slalom Courchevel, the first round

Shiffrin in the lead at the end of the first heat with just 17 cents ahead of Vhlova. For the American, a stage bordering on perfection, completed in 55”24. Third time for Katharina Liensberger, the first of the Austrians and the best of the “humans”, with a second and six hundredths of a second behind the leader. Then Moltzan, Troops, Gallhuber and gradually all the others, up to 21st time for Marta Rossetti, the only Italian to overcome the barrage of the first heat and to enter the thirty, but with a gap of 2″77. Instead, Emilia Mondinelli (39th), Lucrezia Lorenzi (43rd) and Beatrice Sola (48th), out, Lara Della Mea, Martina Peterlini, Anita Gulli and Vera Tschurtschenthaler.

Vhlova overtakes Shiffrin and triumphs in Courchevel

Twist in the second heat. Vhlova flies through the gates of the French track, finishing with a sensational time: 52”73. Shiffrin is not far behind, but halfway through the stage she is already behind her and in the final she only manages to limit the damage, accumulating 41 cents of delay and thus closing 24 cents behind the Slovakian rival. On the lowest step of the podium was the Austrian Truppe, good at taking advantage of the mistake of her compatriot Liensberger, who ended up 26th, and the exits of Hector and Bucik. Rossetti was also out, immediately out of action after a handful of metres: therefore no Italians in the points during the French night.

See the ranking situation after Courchevel now Shiffrin at 700 points, 143 points ahead of Brignone and 209 over Vhlova. Further back Goggia, in fifth position at 396, and Bassino, who has 191 points. Next week double commitment for the slalom in Lienz, Austria: on Thursday 28th there is the giant slalom, on Friday 29th the slalom. On 6-7 January, slalom and giant slalom again, this time in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. The chance for Brignone and Goggia will be a week later with a triple commitment at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, in Austria, between 12 and 14 January: two Super-Gs interspersed with a downhill run.
