Utah Jazz’s Dilemma: Is it Time to Trade John Collins?

12

Are the Utah Jazz ready to trade John Collins again? So it would appear according to Andy Larsen of the Salt Lake Tribune. Despite the good victory against the Portland Trail Blazers, Collins continues to be a problematic addition to Will Hardy’s roster. According to Larsen, in fact, Collins has not yet integrated into the game system proposed by the Jazz, despite him returning to Salt Lake City last summer.

Jazz, John Collins ready to say hello?

As Larsen explains, the Jazz have been frustrated by how slowly Collins is integrating in the game system. He also has the worst defensive rating on the team (minus 11.8) and hasn’t provided much input other than shooting decently (48.2% from the field) and grabbing a lot of rebounds. The averages speak for themselves: 14.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 0.9 assists. Numbers that should be much higher for someone like him.

However, according to Larsen, Collins’ uncertain performances at the start of the 2023-24 season, in addition to the $77 million he is owed for the next three years, they could make it difficult for the Jazz to find a team willing to take him. Utah therefore tries to maximize his presence in Salt Lake City by investing in him for the long term. Alternatively, in the event of a trade, Utah would like to gain as much as possible.

Utah doesn’t need to win right away. On the contrary, the project sees a very long-term development. In fact, the management would like to build on Lauri Markkanen, Keyonte George, Taylor Hendricks, Walker Kessler and Ochai Agbaji, according to Larsen. Hendricks was selected with the ninth pick of the 2023 draft, spending a lot of time in the G League. However, the Jazz really believe in his potential. Then there would be an Italian named Simone Fontecchio whose contract is expiring on whom the Jazz could bet heavily.
