TSV 1860: Relegation Battle and Coaching Concerns

Munich – The lions had long resisted talking about it. The quality of the team is far too high, and some of the other opponents in the bottom of the table are certainly much worse. After the 0-2 defeat at Arminia Bielefeld, TSV 1860 has finally come down to earth: in the relegation battle.

TSV 1860 coach Frank Schmöller: “We got ourselves into this situation”

“The team must now be able to fight relegation, there is no doubt about that,” said a pitiful interim coach Frank Schmöller, who, after coach Maurizio Jacobacci left, managed to make his professional debut as head coach seem like a hopeful affair thanks to his down-to-earth manner . After the disappointment in Bielefeld and before the annual final at SV Waldhof Mannheim on Wednesday (7 p.m./MagentaSport and in the AZ live ticker), he was shocked to realize: “We got ourselves into this situation, now Mannheim has also won.”

The Waldhof, 17th in the table with 17 points, got back on track just in time for the last duel of the year with a furious 3-0 win against Erzgebirge Aue. And the lions? Staggering towards the bottom of the table, which is why Schmöller had to do what no coach in the world likes to experience: declare a relegation battle.

Travel stress and bad mood at TSV 1860

“I’m not a fan of painting everything black or white,” said Schmöller, recognizing the danger of slipping further: “We almost have to get something out of it. We have to get our heads up now.” In Mannheim you have to “show the face that we showed in Bielefeld in the second half. It’s a stupid saying, but a football game lasts 90 minutes.”

Will unsettled and injury-plagued Giesinger perform in Mannheim against the resurgent Waldhöfer over the entire season? “It’s the nice thing in football: You can do better again a few days later,” said Schmöller, who clearly showed where he could now apply the lever: “We have to regenerate and get back up quickly.”

In addition to the bad mood, Schmöller also cited the home team’s advantage as the fact that Mannheim can expect two opponents at home, Aue and Sixty, while 1860 has “travel stress twice”. Sixty should, but Sixty should not have any alibis. Nor the “luck in the game” that Schmöller visibly lacks.

Failed shooter Manfred Starke: “Of course he doesn’t do that on purpose”

The Hamburg native wanted to make it clear again that “not everything was bad against Bielefeld”: “We also had our chances, a few real boards.” Correctly recognized, but 1860 failed due to the post, crossbar, goalkeeper – or his own nerves. For example, Manni Starke, who shot the follow-up shot over the goal completely free after a long-range shot from Albion Vrenezi. “Of course he doesn’t do that on purpose”; Schmöller said protectively, but realized: “Of course it has to be a goal.”

Four games in a row without a goal, a hard-working but toothless striker Fynn Lakenmacher: How does 1860 score goals again? “If it were that easy,” said the former striker. A glimmer of hope for the second half of the season: striker Joel Zwarts was in the stands and was making “progress” in rehab. Schmöller also made it very clear what he thought about the striker as a winter transfer: “It makes sense to take another look at the position.” And in Mannheim the aim is to “find the players who are ready for the task, who are passionate about it and who can perhaps also cope with the pressure.”
