Surviving the Threshold: A Conversation with Torsten Kracht, President of Lok Leipzig, on His Near-Death Experience

“I was already on the threshold.”

That’s what Torsten Kracht (56), President of Lok Leipzig, says. He suffered a heart attack about a week ago, had to be resuscitated three times – and is now fortunately doing well again.

For the first time he is now talking about the minutes between life and death.

“I had the feeling that there was suddenly a 20 or 30 kilo plate on the front of your chest,” says the former Bundesliga professional (Bochum, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Lok Leipzig). “I then laid down on a foam roller because I thought I had jammed something in my back. But it didn’t really get any better, quite the opposite.”

He picked up the phone himself to call the emergency doctor and woke up his wife Sabine. The emergency doctor performed an EKG, immediately diagnosed the heart attack and gave medication. Kracht: “I was asked how I felt on a scale of 1 to 10. I said six to seven. That was the last thing I could remember. Suddenly there was a loud BEEP and I was gone.”

The doctor brought him back. We went to the hospital as quickly as possible. Kracht: “The car drove really quickly to the university clinic, in the snow, it was literally drifting, I noticed that. That was really intense.”

In the university clinic, the almost completely closed vessel was expanded and a stent was inserted. Kracht: “Thank God we are extremely advanced in Germany when it comes to our medical field. It was an operation that lasted about an hour and after that you’ll feel better again relatively quickly. I was lucky that everyone got there quickly, that it didn’t take that long and that not as much heart tissue died and that I didn’t have a lack of oxygen to the brain.

Everything turned out well in the end.

“I took a quick look at the other side,” he says. “I think, especially for my wife, these were images that she can’t get out of her head. I didn’t see the famous bright light myself. I was just a little cold when I woke up.”

How will the life of the construction entrepreneur and locomotive president change now? “I now have a nice pill box and of course I have to pay attention to a few things,” he says. “I’ll be doing more exercise on a regular basis and of course I’ll also pay attention to what I eat.”

He also wants to reduce stress. However, he will remain president of Lok Leipzig. Kracht: “Nobody has to worry about that. “It all fits so far.”
