The Munich transport company’s website read: “Dear passengers, the football game FC Bayern Munich against Union Berlin in Fröttmaning today at 3:30 p.m. has been canceled.”
The cancellation is not primarily about the pitch heating in the Allianz Arena and the playability of the pitch, but rather about the safety and travel of the spectators, some of whom traveled from as far away as Munich.
Munich stands still
Snow and ice caused traffic chaos in the south on Saturday morning. Flight operations at Munich Airport were temporarily suspended until 12 p.m. due to heavy snowfall, and around 320 of 760 planned flights were canceled, a spokesman said.
Train traffic was also at a standstill: Deutsche Bahn assumes that the restrictions in Munich will last the entire Saturday. The railway said it was not possible to reach the main station. Long-distance traffic has been suspended in the greater area of the Bavarian capital as well as on the routes to Salzburg, Innsbruck, Nuremberg, Stuttgart and Lindau/Zurich. Overall, there are delays and train cancellations in long-distance transport in southern Germany due to the weather.
The weather chaos at Munich Airport also affected national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s travel plans for the draw for the European Championship preliminary round in Hamburg. The gala in the Elbphilharmonie begins in the evening at 6 p.m. According to the German Football Association, the national coach should arrive there in time.
