The sports world mourns the death of basketball player Eric Montross. In 1993, he helped lead the North Carolina Tar Heels to the national title. He then played a total of nine seasons in the NBA. After he had to retire from professional sports due to a foot injury, he remained with fans as a radio commentator. Now Eric has died at the age of 52.
Eric died Sunday in Chapel Hill, People reports. The athlete was diagnosed with cancer in March and has been battling the disease ever since. The University of North Carolina, for whom he won the national championship, is now commenting on his death. “His family is grateful for the tremendous support and truly overwhelming love expressed by so many people as he fought with his trademark determination and grace,” the statement said.
During his lifetime, the father of the family supported various charitable causes at his university, including a children’s hospital. He also showed special commitment on the field: fans will probably remember him for a game in 1992 in which he scored important free throws despite his face being covered in blood.
