Meeting at an annual general meeting (AGM) on Saturday in Trois-Pistoles, the governors of the Puribec Baseball League approved the return of a team to Matane for the 2024 season.

As required by the regulations, it was unanimously that the leaders accepted the request of the Matanais after a detailed presentation which met all the criteria for the return of training.

“We were impressed by the seriousness of this new generation of administrators and we are very happy with the rebirth of Matane in the circuit,” says president Denis Bérubé.

The training will bear the name Allées du boulevard, on the strength of a three-year agreement with its major sponsor. The board of directors will be made up of eight members, including president Maxime Gauthier and vice-president Marc-André Junior Coulombe.

Possibility of 8 teams

And that’s not all, with the announcement of Matane and the confirmed return of Kamouraska last summer, the Puribec Baseball League could have eight teams next season since Edmundston has signaled its intention to have a team on the ground in spring.

“Unless otherwise advised, Edmundston will be there,” says group representative Brian Clavette, adding that an important meeting will be held next Tuesday on the subject.

The only downside is that the leaders of the Rivière-du-Loup team have not 100% confirmed the return of the team. They are awaiting the response of several players, including those who remain outside the region and others who could be released by circuit organizations.

“After a few more difficult years, particularly due to the pandemic and uncertainty in certain markets, the possibility of seeing eight teams is excellent news for this league which celebrated its 45th anniversary this year,” mentions Mr. Bérubé.

All other teams will take the field from May. Let us mention that for imported players: this will be the status quo. The regulations are maintained, as is the number of outside players authorized in the past for each team.

Respect

In total, around twenty points were addressed to the AGM for the smooth running of the next season. The exercise showed that the circuit is in financial health and that the sharing of revenue from the playoffs has been and will be profitable for the smaller markets.

In addition, the managers want to take a step forward to improve respect between the players on the field, between the administrators of each team and towards the referees.

Thus, the officials will be less permissive and the fines more steep in a balanced and most competitive regional league.

“It is important to say it loud and clear: referees are very important in the league and if we want new officials, we must train and protect our officials,” concludes the president.
