PRESIDENT Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Greece was on the agenda not only of politics but also of the sports world. An interesting claim was put forward in the Greek press after Erdoğan’s conversation with Panathinaikos Head Coach Ergin Ataman in Athens. It was claimed that Ataman said to President Erdoğan, “I came here so that Panathinaikos could beat Fenerbahçe.”
THE CLAIMS ARE IMAGINARY
As soon as these words echoed on social media, I reached Ergin Ataman. Ataman said that this alleged dialogue between him and the President was completely imaginary. Ataman said that the meeting took place in an extremely friendly atmosphere. The information I obtained from the meeting is as follows:
I WILL HAPPILY BECOME A COACH
PRESIDENT Erdoğan stated that he invited Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis to Turkey and that they even wanted to play basketball together at the Social Complex if the conditions were suitable.
Erdoğan asked Ergin Ataman to coach the Turkish side if this match takes place. Ataman replied, “With pleasure.” ·
Ergin Ataman told the President that he was very well received in Greece and that he was very happy to work here.
FANS LOVE IT VERY MUCH
He stated that the friendship and peace between the two countries can become much stronger, ESPECIALLY through sports, and that the view towards our country is positive, but they can further strengthen this by working together.
Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis spoke highly of Ataman to the Turkish delegation, saying, “You have your coach here, the fans love him very much.”
