NYC Police Warn Public of Criminals Using Mobile Payment Apps Venmo and Zelle for Fraud

[The Epoch Times, December 23, 2023]The New York City Police Department reminds the public to beware of criminals who use mobile payment apps like Venmo and Zelle to transfer money from your account under the guise of raising funds.

The city police department released surveillance video on November 20, which showed several teenagers raising funds from the public in Bryant Park (Bryant Park) in midtown Manhattan. Under the guise of being a school basketball team, they said they were raising new jerseys for the basketball team. or funds for travel activities; these teenage gangsters tell their victims that their schools accept Venmo, Zelle, and Cash App, and require victims to hand over their phones to them and let them enter their school information on the app; victims often have no clue Warily opening the phone and handing it to them, the teenagers took the opportunity to clear the victim’s account. More than $5,000 was transferred from one victim’s Venmo account.

Officials from the city police department reminded the public: Never give your mobile phone to strangers. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also provides several suggestions for people who pay through mobile payment applications: do not send payments to claim prizes or bonuses; do not provide your account login credentials to anyone; use multi-factor authentication or PIN codes to protect the account; carefully confirm the payee’s information before making payment; when receiving a request from someone you know to send money, verify the identity first to make sure it is not a hacker.
