And that perseverance has also allowed him to fulfill a dream, to make history. The young man from Salamanca, 27 years old, was recently proclaimed WAKO full contact world champion, after destroying Slovakia in the round of 16, Poland in the quarterfinals, Kazakhstan in the semifinals and Italy in the final. Pure Spanish pride.
«We made history, because there was only one Spaniard who had achieved it, which was José Vicente Eguzkiza in 1987. And the epic part of the story is that when I achieved it, he was in my corner, something that has united us forever. I have fulfilled a dream. “It is something historic for Spanish full contact and for Salamancan sport,” this Army soldier says proudly.
It has been a long road, but it has been worth it, many people involved in a national success that promotes Lizana as an elite athlete, whose horizon is still promising. Regarding the world championship, it has had the most historic participation, with 77 countries. Furthermore, remembers the Spanish champion, WAKO is the only organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee.
«This sport has grown a lot in recent years, we have more and more impact, but what we demand most is the difficulty of making a living from being a kickboxing competitor. It is true that there are scholarships and sponsorships, but I ask that there be greater support for athletes so that this continues to grow,” Lizana tells this newspaper.
This planetary champion assures that “now is when the sporting career begins”, focused on creating a legacy that allows him to continue filling the showcases of the Spanish team. “It is also important to focus on others believing, developing their maximum potential,” says Lizana. At the moment, he already has the 2024 calendar organized, with a view to highlighting each event in which he competes in green victory.
