How cycling can improve your everyday life –

Scientific research agrees that doing sporting activities, such as cycling, produces extremely positive effects on a physical, mental and social – relational level. We are not just talking about sports practiced at very high levels by professional athletes, but even more so about sports practiced at an amateur level, to which many people dedicate, or perhaps would like to dedicate, part of their free time.

How cycling improves your daily life

Elisabetta Borgia, clinical psychologist of sport and organisations, as well as Coordinator of mental support within the Italian Cycling Federation (FCI) for the Paris 2024 Project, told us the reasons why cycling can improve daily life on the occasion of Campus Bike Convention, the first international event dedicated to the relationship between cycling and performance held in Bologna.

A NATURAL ENDORPHIN ACTIVATOR

We often hear how sport is the best antidepressant on the market. Its main power, in fact, is precisely that of regulating our emotions. For example, very often it is the movement linked to the practice of a sport that allows us to manage unpleasant emotions.

In this regard, cycling is a means through which we activate all those endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, which have a very positive effect on the body, especially on the hormonal profile.

A SHARING AGAINST BAD THOUGHTS

The sharing aspect can make the difference, in terms of enjoyment and gratification: living the two-wheel experience together with friends or acquaintances pushes us to compare experiences and points of view.

If used in a concentrated manner, the bike also allows us to counteract bad thoughts that would return more disruptively to our minds the moment we stop in the work phase. Sport and cycling therefore allow us to concentrate on something pleasant.

A REGENERATING MOMENT OFF

The time has come for good resolutions for the new year. As demonstrated by science itself, it is essential to give space in our daily lives, among the thousand duties that often overwhelm us, for off moments.

So why not include half an hour on the bike into our wellness routine? It will be precisely these moments, which with constant excuses we say we don’t have, that will make us more effective and more efficient in the necessary moments.

IMPROVES ALL PERFORMANCES

The pursuit of performance is not only linked to the world of professional athletes. We must also think in terms of small objectives, which must be realistic: many people find gratification in achieving growing improvements such as the acquisition of greater mastery or a skill not previously had.

The bike can also help us in this sense and it is a process that, once triggered, manages to spread throughout the day, also supporting us in our further spheres of interest or in facing less pleasant moments.
