Although their path to sporting glory is paved, they face the additional challenge of competing under a neutral flag due to the suspension of the Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG) due to outside interference.

The list of Guatemalan athletes that will shine in Paris includes Adriana Ruano in the shooting discipline, Andres Fernandez in pentathlon, Jean Pierre Brol also in shooting, Jose Alejandro Barrondo in track and field, Juan Ignacio Maegli in sailing, Luis Grijalva in track and field in the 5,000-meter category, Sophia Hernandez in pentathlon, and Alberto Gonzalez in track and field and marathon.

Adriana Ruano (shooting) Andres Fernandez (pentathlon) Jean Pierre Brol (shooting) Jose Alejandro Barrondo (track and field – marching) Juan Ignacio Maegli (sailing) Luis Grijalva (track and field – 5,000 meters) Sophia Hernandez (pentathlon) Alberto Gonzalez (track and field – marathon)

Despite the significant achievement of these athletes, a shadow of uncertainty surrounds their participation, as they will compete under the neutral flag due to the suspension of the COG. The sanction imposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is a consequence of external interference in the operations of the COG. Although the athletes are Guatemalan at heart, their Olympic representation will be devoid of national colors and symbols.

So far, no specific date has been announced for the lifting of the sanction against the COG. Meanwhile, Guatemalan athletes are focusing on their preparations for Paris 2024, carrying with it national pride despite the absence of the Guatemalan flag. The situation raises questions about the future of the COG and its ability to safeguard Guatemala’s Olympic identity.
