The day after Asvel’s great victory over Fenerbahçe Istanbul, the two other French clubs involved in the Euroleague experienced varying fortunes on Wednesday, during the ninth day of the regular season. Villeneuve-d’Ascq, finalist of the LFB last season, largely beat the Spanish Salamanca (82-58), second in the standings before the start of the day.
The Northerners signed a 26-8 in the last quarter. Kariata Diaby was the top scorer for Villeneuve-d’Ascq with 26 points. She also grabbed 11 rebounds and made three steals. Kennedy Burke also had a double-double, with 16 points and 10 rebounds (plus four steals). Building on its victory, Villeneuve-d’Ascq climbed to fourth place.
Basket Landes ends up giving in
Basket Landes, defending champion in the Coupe de France, however suffered a defeat at home against the Turks of Cukurova Mersin (72-70). Despite the close score, the Landaises were always behind in the last quarter. They came back to within one point 0’07” from the buzzer, on free throws from Marie Pardon. But Mersin, in turn, benefited from a series and scored one more point.
Angela Salvadores, the Spanish center of Basket Landes, was the best scorer of the match with 24 points. His team is second to last in its group, with only two victories.
