Berrettini’s Road to Recovery: A New Coach and a Fresh Start

It wasn’t an easy year for Berrettini, who was only able to play 23 matches in 2023 due to numerous injuries. He won twelve of them and had to admit defeat eleven times.

This is also why the Roman native left his comfort zone at the end of October and separated from Santopadre after twelve years together.

Now the current number 92 in the world rankings wants to start a new chapter. The goal: get back into the top 20 as quickly as possible. A difficult task, but not an impossible one.

With Roig, the 27-year-old now has a former world-class doubles player at his side. For example, together with his partner Tomás Carbonell, he reached the quarterfinals at the French Open in 1997.

18 years at Nadal’s side

In 2005, the now 55-year-old joined the then 19-year-old Rafael Nadal’s coaching staff. He initially held the role of second coach behind Uncle Toni Nadal, then he took over the reins together with Carlos Moya.

In public, Roig played a smaller role, but he was extremely important for the superstar himself. The man from Barcelona took over the reins of the Nadal team, especially in the tactical area and when switching from clay court to grass.

Now Roig should support Berrettini in his return to the top of the world. Both are currently training together in Monte Carlo before heading to Australia in a few days. The Italian will first have to play the tournament in Brisbane in the first week of January, before the first highlight of the new season with the Australian Open in Melbourne on January 14th.
