Frame-winning miss breaks frustrated Luca Brecel in the 1/16th final of the Scottish Open

Off to a good start, yes. Luca Brecel (WS 4) took charge of the first frame against the Englishman Martin O’Donnell with a break of 57.

But the world number 80 hit back and hung the plates in balance. In frame three, the 37-year-old Londoner pocketed a 75 break for a 2-1 lead.

In frame four, Brecel, the 2021 Scottish Open champion, had an open opportunity to level the score again. He missed that, causing frustrations to bubble up within the world champion.

O’Donnell, who also won against Brecel in the previous two matches, posted a 70. Once again with his back against the wall, Brecel recovered. The Belgian showed himself to be the best in a long, drawn-out fifth frame.

In the next frame, Brecel made another mistake and it was O’Donnell who sealed the fate of our compatriot with an 82 break: 2-4.

Julien Leclercq (WS 28) has also had to drop out. The Liège native was able to keep pace during the first four frames. In the next two frames his opponent, the Chinese Si Jiahui (WS 28), managed breaks of 85 and 97 for a 4-2 victory.
