Hamburger SV had won all seven home games of the season so far in the 2nd Bundesliga. Then came SC Paderborn.

Wonderful HSV leadership

Both teams had to play (unsuccessfully) in the DFB Cup during the week. HSV even went to penalties when they were eliminated against Hertha, seemed more sluggish in the first few minutes against SCP, but quickly became more present – and more successful. Laszlo Benes gave the hosts the lead with a 23-meter dream shot into the top right corner (11th minute).

Paderborn’s equalizer out of nowhere

In the middle of the Hamburgers’ further push, the guests struck out of nowhere. After a nice combination with Florent Muslija, Filip Bilbija beat HSV keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandez with a hard-hitting low shot from twelve meters (21′). Despite clear advantages in terms of ball possession and pressure going forward, it wasn’t enough for HSV to take the lead again until the break.

SCP initially outnumbered

In the second half it took Hamburg a long time to get into the game. Too long. Ilyas Ansah took advantage of a slip by substitute Dennis Hadžikadunić, stormed towards Heuer Fernandez alone and scored his first second division goal from 14 meters (62′).

However, the cards were literally reshuffled again in the 69th minute. Goalscorer Bilbija saw red after a tough start against Nicolas Oliveira – Paderborn only had ten men. Referee Bastian Dingert initially only showed yellow, but corrected his decision after the VAR intervened.

Then Hamburg’s Muheim also sees red

Duplicity of events just a few minutes later: Hamburg’s Miro Muheim also initially received a yellow card, but after another VAR intervention he was shown red for an emergency brake (78th).

The game remained open as a result. Would the hosts attempt another final spurt like against St. Pauli? No, despite nine minutes of stoppage time, HSV’s wild but unplanned attacking efforts were unsuccessful – although Heuer Fernandez even appeared in the opponent’s penalty area. However, Hamburg were unlucky in the final phase with two aluminum hits.

Paderborn against Rostock, HSV in Nuremberg
