Filip Joos: A Voice for Change in Belgian Football

Filip Joos has been the face of Extra Time since this season. He has a clear opinion on everything that concerns football in our country.

Filip Joos, for example, is an ardent supporter of the competition format with the play-offs. That creates a lot of tension, especially if you watch the denouement of last season.

Although you can of course ask whether a competition format should not simply be fair. “Even if you look at it this way, there is a lot to be said for the play-offs. Everyone plays against everyone, and then the best teams find out among themselves who excels the most: that’s not surprising, is it?

Such a system is disadvantageous for the smaller clubs. “But for me the great appeal of football is the excitement. So I also support halving the points. However, I think you could do that in a much smarter way: give two points for a win in the regular competition instead of three.”

A lot of tension in the Jupiler Pro League, that is something that you hardly encounter anymore, even in Europe. “You actually only see that in the Premier League – in most other countries there is a clear hierarchy,” Joos continues.

“By the way, we said here far too quickly that Club Brugge was becoming the Bayern Munich of Belgium. That really doesn’t happen that easily here. With Union and Antwerp we now also have new top clubs, each with their own fairytale: you can only applaud that, right? Especially because they are clubs with such a beautiful history and such a great support base.”
